Dorian & Mixolydian Guitar Colors

Hear the chord underneath a mode. A shared note collection does not make every landing equally settled.

Dorian and Mixolydian in harmonic context · By Vincent Iannone · Updated

What is the difference between Dorian and Mixolydian?

Dorian and Mixolydian are modes of the major scale with different centres. Dorian is a minor mode with a natural sixth: D Dorian is D E F G A B C. Mixolydian is a major mode with a flat seventh: G Mixolydian is G A B C D E F. Both contain exactly the notes of C major, yet they sound different because the chord underneath sets the centre. Over Dm7, D Dorian’s F and C are guide tones. Over G7, G Mixolydian’s B and F are guide tones, and its F (the ♭7) separates it from G major, which has F♯. A shared collection of notes does not make every note equally stable: over G7, C works best as a passing note rather than one held against B.

The idea

D Dorian uses D E F G A B C; G Mixolydian uses G A B C D E F; C Ionian uses C D E F G A B. They share the notes of C major, but their roots and chord tones create different centers. Over G7, treat C as a passing or resolving sound rather than automatically holding it against B.

Put it under your fingers

  1. Play D Dorian slowly over Dm7. Pause on F and C to hear the guide tones.
  2. Switch to G Mixolydian. Sing B before playing it over G7.
  3. Resolve to C Ionian and end on E. Compare landing on a third with ending on the root.

One phrase, two Mixolydian endings

G3-A3-B3-D4 is answered by G3-A3-B3-F4. The final F is G Mixolydian's minor seventh, not the F# of G major.

Sounding notes: G3 → A3 → B3 → D4 → G3 → A3 → B3 → F4.

Make it yours

Play G A B D, then leave a bar of space. Repeat it and finish on F instead of D.

Keep the ideas connected.
